The Shortt Pickens House

Pickens' Bathroom Before & After

Guys, we are super close to finishing the Pickens' before and afters! Just two more after this!

Originally I'd planned to do a fun and bold wallpaper in this tiny little bath, but once we decided to sell (you can read why here), we decided it was best to go with paint and a safer color option that would appeal to more people. Here's a look at the bathroom before.

Not terrible, but not great either. It's hard to tell from these images, but the paper was peeling off the walls. There was no ventilation in the bathroom when we moved in, so it was not an ideal situation for paper with all the moisture,

When I was peeling the paper from the walls (read here for what's worked for us), there was another layer of what we think was wallpaper underneath it. It peeled off the wall super easy up until close to the ceiling and than it would just not peel for anything. We're not even %100 sure it was wallpaper. It was just really odd. I mudded over the edges where whatever it was quit peeling to smooth out the walls and used an oil-based primer to coat the walls before painting. Let me tell you, although it is not fun to clean up after, that oil-based primer covers a multitude of sins, and if we get to work on another old house, I'll probably be using it again. Here's some images to show you what I'm talking about with the mystery material.

When choosing a color, I broke my own rule and did't sample the paints first. We were in a rush and didn't really have time or want to spend the extra money. I taped paint chips up and moved them around throughout the day to see them in different light. In the end, the color came out with more of a green tint than I wanted, but it still worked well with the rest of the house and we ended up using the same color in the office and kitchen. It's really amazing what just paint did for this little room! I would have loved to update it more, but I guess I'll just have to wait until the next house!

Pickens Laundry/Mudroom Room Before & After

This is another room that we just got to freshen up with paint, but I wanted to share it with you guys to share some of the ideas I had for the space in case it might be something you can try in your own laundry room or enclosed porch.

Like the office, this room used to be a side porch, but unlike the office it isn't heated or cooled. Before we walled up the door and window in the master bedroom, this is the room you could look out and see, and as you can see it was a lovely view.

The yellow was bright and cheery in this room but just too much for this little space for me personally. I wanted simple and clean. We went with the same white that we used in the living room and hallway. (You can read why I love white here and how to make it feel warm and cozy here)

From the time we moved in I always pictured this room a crisp white. It's the laundry/mudroom, and I wanted it to feel really crisp and clean and fresh. Kind of like clean laundry except hopefully without the crisp part.

If we had stayed in this house for awhile, I planned on planting an herb wall because I love using fresh herbs when I cook and it looks pretty, and adding in shelving for extra storage of larger kitchen and decor items and probably shoes on the bottom shelves. Below are some very rough mockups of what I had in mind.

I hope that helps you guys see a little of what I had in mind for this little workroom and hopefully it might give you some ideas for your own. I think I have just 3 more before and after posts left on the Pickens' House and than it's onto other projects and discussions!

Pickens' Office Before & After

Well guys, this will be one of the quickest before and after's ever, but it does show what a difference a little (or a lot) of paint can make!

We never got to use our office as an office much less style anything in it. It was storage central while we renovated the rest of the house. I'm not gonna lie, I'm kind of sad I never got to style those bookshelves.

There was a lot going on texture wise in this tiny room. The ceilings were bead board. One side of the room was paneling and the other side was brick and the floors were concrete. From what we can tell, this room used to be a little side porch that was closed in. The colors were dated and dirty and too dark for this little one-window room.

My goal with this room was to simplify and clean up the colors since there is so much going on texture wise. I used a greenish grey that is both calming and fresh feeling on the walls and painted the concrete floor white. I wanted this small room to feel clean, calming, and crisp so that it creates a nice atmosphere for whatever the future buyer chooses to us it for.

There's more I would have liked to have done to this room to really clean it up and make it shine, but I'm happy with the little refresh we were able to give it for its future owners!
