What is E-Design?
Simply put, E-Design is a design service that more and more interior designers and some bloggers are starting to offer that is strictly done electronically through email and/or video platforms. There are even a few companies that offer e-design exclusively.
How Does E-Design Work?
Rather than in person meetings and consultations, you work with a designer through email and sometimes video platforms. Often they will have you complete a questionnaire and invite you to collaborate on a Pinterest board to help asses your style and view products, and they may ask you to give them a video tour of your space. You will also need to provide the designer with measurements and pictures of your space and maybe a floor plan.
After the designer has all the information they need, they will get to work designing your space. Often they'll create a mood board and present you with a plan through email. You'll email back any revisions or changes you would like made, they'll make the revisions and present the changed plans. Often e-design packages come with a limited number of revisions, so you'll want to be very clear with the designer from the beginning about your vision for the space and what you like and don't like. After the mood board and/or floor plan is finalized, they'll send you the final mood board, floor plan, and a list of sources. After you've received your package, you are than responsible for ordering and implementing the design.
What's included in E-design?
Every e-designer varies in what they offer in their e-design packages. Some will provide you with a mood board and sources, some will offer a mood board and sources along with a floor plan, some will offer you more than one mood board and a certain amount of revisions, some will work with you through video to help you style your space once your items arrive, etc.. It's important to understand before you hire an e-designer what exactly you'll receive to avoid any misunderstandings or disappointments at the end of the design process.
Why do designers offer E-design?
Budget Friendly Option: Often designers will offer e-design as a more budget friendly option for those who would like the help of a designer but maybe don't have the budget for full service design.
Long Distance Option:They also offer it as an option to those who would like to work with them, but live in different parts of the country or world.
Who should hire an E-designer?
E-design is great if you have some initiative and don't mind a little DIY such as measuring and sketching a floor plan, ordering products, and installing them once they arrive.
Why you should consider E-design?
Budget Friendly: While it still may not be "chep" as mentioned above, e-design is usually a good option for those who would like the help of a designer, but are working with a tight budget.
Stress Reliever: It's a great option for those who feel overwhelmed by sourcing or shopping for items for their home and have no idea where to look or start or even what to look for.
Time saver: It's great for those who simply don't have the time to shop or design their space.
How much should I expect to pay for an e-design?
I've seen designers offer as low as $225 for their e-designs to over $3,000. It all depends on the designer, their goal for their e-design program, their experience, and their availability.
And keep in mind when you're considering your overall budget, you are just paying for the design and not the labor or products.
What are your tips for hiring an e-designer?
Look for someone whose style you love and who you enjoy following their blog/social media. Chances are good that if you love their style and they're personality through their social outlets, you'll enjoy working them.
Look for someone who falls in your budget or someone you're willing to save for.
Be ready to implement your design immediately once they hand it off to you. They are providing you with online sources that will come and go with the seasons and popularity. If you wait to order the products they provide you with, chances are they will no longer be available..
