"New" Pillows in the Master Bedroom

Since we're tackling big picture and big budget projects at #theshorttpickenshouse right now, I've had to refrain from buying all the smaller decorative touches that help make a house feel like a home and give a room its polished and cozy air.

As much as I want to go out and shop for all that fun stuff, it's also been good for me because it's made me "shop" our house and use what we already have and try things in new places.

After we got the master bedroom painted and the bed put up,  I liked the way the bed and room looked over all, but felt it just needed something else to add a little more substance. I just had the shams that came with the duvet and a couple of decorative pillows so I went shopping around my house.

We've had these huge pillows from Ikea for almost a year now, and I've always used them on the couch, but scale wise they were too big for the couch and never really looked right and we usually just tossed them in the floor anyways when we sat on the couch, so I thought I'd try to give them a new life somewhere else.

Enter our master bedroom. Although I'm not crazy about the color of the covers in here, they add that substance I was looking for plus a "pop" of color and they're a good stand in until I can do what I want.

Over all I'm pleased and Kendall likes them better in here although he did say I can't add any more pillows to the bed. And since he often makes the bed, I am happy to give in to that "request." Any more pillows would be too much for me anyways.

What do you think? Do you like the bed with just the white and black pillows or do you like them with them with the blue green pillows added? Leave your vote in the comments!

Master Bedroom Progress: New Wall & Color

Happy Monday and Labor Day friends! I hope you're enjoying a day off with your friends and family or working on a project like us!

After 3 weeks of working on this room and than another week in the guest bedroom, I'm excited to finally be sharing some of the progress in our master bedroom today.

You might be saying, "Whitney, I've painted rooms in a day. What took so long?"

Well, if you've been following along, you know that I'm pretty new to the DIY/renovation side of things. I spent a lot of time researching how to repair cracks and holes in the walls, repairing said cracks and holes, stripping paint from trim, sanding, multiple trips to both Lowe's and Home Depot, getting the hang of edging and painting, and my neighbor and husband walled up a door and window as well. So all that combined with working my part time job and just living life, and tackling projects in an older home that needs a lot of TLC took longer than I expected. But let me tell you. It feels so good to have a  couple of rooms painted!

As a reminder, here's some before pictures of what we started with. Yellow sponged paint, carpet, and a window and door that looked out into the laundry room.

Before painting we ripped up the carpet to expose the original hardwoods, patched the cracks and holes in the walls, and sanded down the trim.

And than our awesome neighbor volunteered to come over and help us wall up the window and door that looked into the laundry room. It looks a thousand times better now. Like a real bedroom.

And here it is with all new color and the new wall.

And with the bed added! You can see from these two sets of photos that at different times of the day it looks more blue or grey which is the crossover I was hoping for with this color.

As far as style and styling goes, this room is a ways from where I want it to be. Right now, it feels a little bit country and unfinished. There's nothing wrong with that, it's just not my personal preference. Eventually I want this room to have a sophisticated, yet vintage and maybe a little boho vibe to it. I'm working on a mood board that I hope to share with you guys later so you can see what my vision is for this room.

Eventually we plan to:

  • refinish the floors (which should be happening in the next month or two)
  • paint the baseboards
  • paint the doors
  • add window treatments
  • replace the light fixture
  • add nightstands and bedside lamps
  • replace the dresser
  • attach our headboard
  • change the bedding up a little bit. I still love this duvet and pillows, but I'd like to add a little more color and texture.
  • add some art to the walls
  • fix the baseboard where we took out the door
  • remove the ceiling tiles and have a smooth ceiling. (That's probably a ways down the road. It all depends on how long we stay in this house.)

So, there you go! I'm really happy with how the color turned out, but I'd love to hear what you guys think!
