When we first moved into this house, we opted to stay in what we call our guest bedroom because color wise it was more tolerable than our master bedroom and didn't have a window and door looking out into our laundry room.
Here are some before shots. It wasn't unlivable or horrible but it wasn't pretty either and just felt dingy and dirty. Sorry these aren't the greatest before shots. For some reason, I thought I'd taken a lot more pictures of this room than I actually had. #bloggerfail
Since we're flipping this house to either rent or sale we decided to paint this room the same blue grey color as the master bedroom. You can read why we chose that particular color here. I'm really loving how it came out in both rooms!
My goal when pulling this room together was to use things we already owned. I did end up purchasing a new duvet cover since we didn't have one yet, and l also purchased a decorative pillow cover but other than that everything else we already had. Granted, some of the stuff I used to style this space is stuff I'm supposed to be putting in an online shop eventually, but now that they're on my shelves, I'm not so sure that they're going to make it there.
The iron bed is one that Kendall's aunt gave to use when we first got married. (Here is a similar one, but I love this one!) We spray painted it black for this room. (This is the paint we used.) When it lived with her it was a bright yellow, than we painted it a cream color when we moved into our first rental house, and now it's black. Who knows what other colors it will see in the future, but for now I'm loving it black! My goal with adding touches of black through the bed and accents on the shelves was to add a hint of sophistication to this room. It could easily start to feel a little blah without the contrast that the black adds or a little country with the blueish walls, ticking stripe, and sheet ruffles.
I found this cute chair at one of our local thrift stores. One of the guys priced it to me at almost 30 dollars and his business partner heard him and was like "noooo" and sold it to me for I think 15. I was laughing inside and glad for the deal. I'm planning on recovering the seat cushion in this red and white Otomi print from Spoonflower eventually. I think it will really pop nicely in this room.
The cute bohemian pillow is one of Ikea's new items, and I just love it. The duvet is also from Ikea and comes in a couple of other colors. The funny thing is, is that I bought this exact duvet when we were living in the apartment, but decided I wanted to make my own and so I sold it. Well, let's just say that duvet cover never got made and now I'm back where I started. It's a classic design that will go with a lot, and I probably won't get tired of it too soon. The ruffled sheets aren't exactly my style because they lean a little more country than I'm going for, but they do the trick for now and actually help add some texture in here for the time being.
The bookcases are also Ikea. This is their third home and they've held up well. Eventually I'd love to paint them the same white that we're using in the rest of the house. The white that Ikea uses on them is a warmer white than we went with in this house so they look more cream than white here. They're also temporary in this space until we redo the laundry room and than they'll probably go in as "built-ins" to give us more storage in there.
So, what's left to do in this space?
- Well obviously the windows need something. I've got some long white curtains that I'd like to hang and I'm debating on adding some small pom pom trim like this blogger did to add some more visual interest and a touch of whimsy.
- I also have some wall mounted lamps to hang on either side of the bed.
- I also think it would be fun to bring in some more fun bohemian type textiles and add some art, but I'll add those things as I find them.
- Once the shelves are moved out, I'll looks for some small side tables or I've thought about DIYing some wall mounted nightstands like these on either side.
- And lastly, I'd like to update the light fixture.
Anything I'm missing? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
