The past few years I’ve refrained from making any New Year’s resolutions. To be honest, I knew I would break them so why make them, right? I didn’t like the idea of setting myself up for failure at the beginning of the year so resolutions remained off of my list of things to do.
But this year I’ve changed my mind. I’ve felt like the last few years my life has been very unsettled and all over the place. I finished college, moved several times, got married, started new jobs, and started my own business. I’ve gained weight, lost some of my better habits, and become disorganized, and I intend for 2015 to be the year I change all of that. I want to get my life back on track and be successful in the coming year.
You see, in college, it was easy to be organized and feel like I was accomplishing things. I had projects and deadlines and a schedule. Now that I’ve been out of college for awhile and trying to figure out what I want to do with my life and start my own business, I‘ve just been scattered and all over the place.
I decided though, that if I was going to make resolutions, they had to be reasonable, measurable, and attainable. During breaks at work I started making a list of habits I wanted to form and goals I wanted to achieve. I started noticing categories in my list, which helped me divide and organize my intentions.
I came up with 5 categories:
- health and physical fitness
I also am trying some new ways to help me keep up and stay on track with my habits and goals. First of all, I bought this nifty little planner from Target which will act as a planner, organizer, and somewhat of a journal for me.
At the beginning of each month, I plan to pencil in a monthly overview jotting down when I plan to blog and potential topics, events I know that we have coming up for that month, and so on.
There's also a place for notes on the right hand side of the calendar where I plan on jotting down my monthly goals and the things I want to focus on. For example, for the month of January, I plan on reading and focusing on the book of Romans for my daily devotions.
On the Sunday box of the monthly calendar is where I plan to jot down my goals for the coming week.
And than the individual days of the planner is where I intend to make my list for each day on the left hand side and than journal what I actually got accomplished on the right hand side at the end of the day.
Sound confusing enough? ;)
I know that I'm not going to just become this new, amazing person all of sudden just because I've written down all of these goals and intentions. I know that I am going to fail some and falter and be tempted to give it all up because let's be honest, sticking with our goals and resolutions is a lot of work, and failure is discouraging. But knowing that I am going to fail some (and already have) is not going to stop me from picking myself up and trying again in the next moment because why should we wait until tomorrow? At the end of the year, I want to look back and see that my success has outweighed the times I've failed.
